Listen In with Emily: Talking about Crowdfunding

Over the course of a few weeks I’ve been working on a podcast, it investigates the question of “Has the rise of crowdfunding highlighted the ‘democratising’ potential of the online world”.

I went about creating it by first procrastinating and then actually focusing on the task. I wanted to go very simple with the podcast to make sure the information was clear to the audience as I found when I put background music or soundbytes to it took away from the main focus and the question. Keeping it simple with an intro, outro and my main voice being the driving focus of my podcast.

My podcast informed the reader by answering the question and then showing evidence. Although hard to see/hear the quotations, of the information I had gathered, there was a story from the Kickstarter founder that I read out. I also tried to make sure that as everything flowed it was still clear and sent the answer across. I will provide the sources used down below.

I wanted to make this a chill but informational podcast so as I included:

I used snippets of this music in the intro and the outro of my podcast while then using the fade in and fade out so that the transition from the music to my voice was not harsh on the ears when listening in.

the challenges I faced were making sure I could work with the app and that I could navigate my way around it. Challenging at times I found myself just under five minutes and still having all my information in the podcast. I used a lot of cutting as sometimes you could hear when I pressed record and I cut out my breathing as it was sometimes noticeable. Solutions I adopted were simply just going back and listening to myself and making sure my words were clear as I often struggled with saying the dates of when events happened in my podcast, for example I often stumbled when I said; “2002 Jazz Fest and April 28, 2009” and so on. This taught me to slow down also. What I learnt from the task was that getting my head around the program I used when creating the podcast was how I could make it better in the future. I was able to learn how to make and export a podcast and then upload it to a platform (SoundCloud) and share it amongst others. I was able to quickly learn how to edit and make sure it flowed with all the editing and then put the music in at the start and end of my podcast. I learnt how to fade in and fade out as it was a matter of clicking 3 buttons or so and I also learnt how much I enjoyed making this overall.

Overall, I really enjoyed this podcast and I hope you do too. I think the information in the podcast will show another side of this question and hopefully help answer some questions if you have any. I found this a great challenge and one that I was able to have all the emotions of making an assignment. I also was able to have the joy of when I got the podcast in the time frame by 5 seconds. I also was able to create and upload an image for the podcast as I felt it needed an image after creating it to complete the podcast. I used the elements I felt fit best – headphones, soundwave and my name.

Past, Present and My Online Identity

Many Social Media platforms, Many ways to show the different sides of us.

In this world, we’ve gotten lucky to have technology that allows us to show what we want you to see. I’ve been able to use technology to construct my online identity in the way I want you to see me, my past experiences relating to my online identity shows how I present myself and how I’ve changed along my social networking journey. I will also let you know how I show my private side along with my public side on all my platforms, such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Also, I’ll explain how my online identity worked with my online dating experience as well. As I did research as well I found a few sources in relation to Online Identity and this post!

Social Media Personas | Reality vs. Online Identities

In recent years, social media has impacted the way in which users communicate with their friends, family, colleagues, as well as how they communicate with people they have never met offline.

Whether comprised of friends or followers, social networking sites (SNS) have audiences. These audiences are made up of individuals who view, react, and engage with shared content.

Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat allow users to present themselves and their content in any way that they choose for their audiences.

My past experiences relating to my online identity shows how I present myself and how I show my private side along with my public side on all my platforms

The way I show my public and private is mostly through Instagram. I have 5 Instagram accounts,

–        Private Instagram

–        Public Instagram

–        Art account

–        Brand/Merch account

–        And my account for my dog, Fred

Identity Construction

Identity in social media sites is often expressed through customization.

Online profiles allow people to use the language of media to express themselves to others.

I show a lot of variety on my Public and Private account and along with my Twitter and Facebook. One of my recent tweets shows how I don’t really care too much most of the time and one of my recent Instagram pictures showing how I care too much about my online identity. Caring too much can also be seen in my Facebook profiles, mostly ones that have more likes as they are photos I also tried more in. I try to blur the line between my public and private online life however my private Instagram is very much just close friends and leans towards posting a lot more and posting whatever I feel like.

This photo is shown on my Facebook as my profile, with my friend who moved to Scotland, taken by another one of our friends. This is what you see when you open up my facebook page.

This is what I posted on Twitter showing my more silly side that shows a more personal side.

This is my Public Instagram, this gives a similar idea with my Facebook page, showing that I care more about my appearance in this photo and my Facebook profile. Not so much in my Twitter post.

How my online identity worked with my online dating experiences

I’ll be real with you, I really do go for looks first and then see if the person is nice and compatible with what I’m looking for. I’ve come across a lot of people who have given me life lessons, big and small, but also come across people who can look good but have an ugly way of being. Online dating is very much a “see where it goes” kind of thing. It could last one minute or 10 years, who knows. But it also shows that if you don’t take the opportunity, you never know what could have happened and where you could be.
I’m still fresh into a relationship with my partner I met on Tinder, not the place I thought I’d end up finding my next boyfriend to be completely honest. But seeing as how I really dislike clubbing and going to bars and I’m not very good with going up to strangers, I thought I’d give online dating a try. I had to set up a profile that showed who I was, write a description and then also put what age I was looking for in, and once I did that it was up to my thumb to start swiping.
To be completely honest I did delete these dating apps 2-3 times before finding my now current boyfriend and by the time I did, my description or bio as they also call it was non-existent so the swiper was going purely off my looks. I didn’t mind at this point as I was more into looks both in online and in real life, but I wanted to also give each guy a chance in the first stage of just chatting and getting to know them. A few would start with “hey, how are you?” whereas some others would get straight to the point … if you catch my drift.
My now boyfriend started off with a “hey, how are you?” or something along those lines, I thought great, it wasn’t me who started the chat. As there are some apps, like Bumble for example, that only allow females to start the conversation.
I wanted myself to appear as funny and nice but also what I thought I looked good in. And it appears it worked in the way I presented my online identity.

This tweet was shared after a Zoom Session where we talked about online identity and online dating, how they come together.

In Conclusion

My online experiences have led me to believe that we all have our sides that we show, and we don’t show. Being someone who has grown up in a technology world, our online identity makes us feel like it’s everything, sometimes when we look at other accounts or how other people present themselves, there have been days where I wished I looked like that or had that style or even had that level of followers. Our online identity can show only glimpses of who we are but can never show who we really are as a human being and not as an online persona.

Getting Personal

Hey, Welcome to my Blog!

If you haven’t already, check out my About Me page, there, you can read all about me, and I’ll also be giving you an insight to who I am even though it explains a lot in the About Me page. You can also visit my online portfolio too!

To start off, I must let you know I’m not a big writer and I’ve never been a big reader either, I’d read for school and the personal readings would be on social media and then if I picked up a book I went straight for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Yes, very basic and low levelled I know. But be patient with me please. I felt better with creating art and making things then when I was at pen and paper or even at writing things on social media. Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to pick up the Making Media unit at Deakin University. However, I didn’t realise how much would be involved in doing the course before I thought I’d give it a go.

Another reason I wanted to pick up this unit and course was to see if I could build my confidence and get some knowledge around social media and possibly soon enough try YouTube as another creative outlet. I always loved making things from artworks in paintings and sculptures, to architectural buildings and then to what I created in my VCE Visual Communications and Design class being my Devils Cider brand so I thought giving YouTube a go would be a good idea as I’ve uploaded works for when I also did Media Studies at School and used to be really into filming things as a child/pre-teen which thankfully I never uploaded.

Procrastination has always been something I don’t do well with as I find other things to do like a lot of sleeping and eating… but also, I think as I have work I leave things to the last-minute instead of finding the time I clearly have to work on Uni and personal creative projects. I also need to read more as I feel like I sometimes don’t know I’m doing when it comes to writing things such as blog posts. And I find that I write how I speak, but unfortunately you can’t see my face when writing these either and that’s another reason I’d love to try other creative outlets. I also need to do the work and share more! Try and get out there in the world of WordPress and Twitter!

I hope you have a wonderful day and thank you for taking the time to read my very informal blog post! Practise by doing, ‘learning by doing’ and stay tuned to see more and hopefully I’ll improve in my writing style.
